W. Disney is rolling in his grave… and covering his eyes

It’s been so long since the MTV VMAs happened but it is probably the most talked about awards show since, well, I can’t even remember when. And who won all the awards? I couldn’t even tell you. What do I remember? Miley Cyrus, ‘N Sync and Lady Gaga. All of these three had nothing to do with the actual awards.

Unlike other awards shows, the VMAs are simply about outrageousness and shock. It doesn’t matter if you were nominated, if you lost or if you won. If you had people buzzing — mission: accomplished.

Where to begin? You’ll recall Miley Cyrus is the Disney-star-turned-bleep who bleeped around the stage and bleeped her bleep into Robin Thicke’s bleep while bleeping him. (At the risk of getting in trouble for editorializing and using vulgar language I’ll let you fill in the blanks for that last sentence.)

It was an awkward and uncomfortable performance with 20-year-old Cyrus and 36-year-old married father Thicke. In fact, media watchdog, Parents Television Council, blasted MTV for “marketing sexually charged messages to young children using former child stars.”

For his part, Thicke seemingly didn’t go too far, it was Cyrus – former cutesy Hannah Montana – who not only crossed the line, but spit on it, stomped on it and kicked dirt all over it.

People are wondering if Cyrus is headed the way of Britney Spears with her squeaky clean image shed and a new rebellious look and attitude. We hear about Cyrus’s alleged drug use and bizarre haircuts that it almost seems like she’s a mini Spears (with a Disney connection, too).

As the celebrity ages, so too does his or her following… usually. Is Cyrus still an idol to kids and tweens? Is a character like Hannah Montana cool for teenagers these days?

Unlike Justin Bieber, Cyrus’s fans fell in love with a character and grew up with her. I don’t believe she is targeting a younger demographic anymore – well, at least I hope not with that VMAs performance.

In the end, Cyrus claims to have broken a Twitter record, saying, “My VMA performance had 306,000 tweets per minute. That’s more than the blackout or Superbowl!”

Like I said at the beginning, as trashy and as classless as the spectacle was, Cyrus has everyone talking and the buzz is all about her first new album in three years. Will it be enough to send her to the top of the charts? We shall soon see. It is due out in October.
